Early update tonight because Shelby is asleep and Shelby's aunt Corby is here and has generously offered to stay the night. So I'm going home very soon to crash and get a good night's rest of my own. Shelb was absolutely exhausted today. She has been having trouble sleeping the past few nights so this morning it finally caught up with her. She slept through a portion of morning PT and all of speech and OT (not the shower). She did make it to her afternoon sessions of OT and PT but was still pretty wiped out. You can see what they were doing in PT from the previous video. She seems to do best in PT and I think that is mainly because it gets her the most active. She struggles when a task is not engaging enough to keep her up. Tonight they are going to give her a sleeping aid to try and get her to sleep through the entire night. This would be good if it works. She still has not completely gotten her schedule in order and I think it will help her greatly when she does, that way she can really give all her therapies her full potential and effort. Shelby will be staying in rehab for a while. There is nothing that will get her discharged at this point but a cessation of her own progress. This alone is enough to be praying for. A longer stay (while sad for Hazel and me) is really better for her. Many people keep asking me about when she will be able to eat so I thought I would give everyone my take using what I have heard from all the various sources. She will eat when she can speak. Shelby was prone to dysphagia prior to the surgery. With one vocal fold not working properly this increases her risk of aspiration even more. These two factors together make it likely that she will not have her diet upgraded to full eating until after she is speaking. Until tomorrow pray that she sleeps through the night and that she starts progressing more in speech so I can start subjecting her to my awful cooking (which is still a slight step up from hospital food).

Matt,
I love getting the videos and detailed updates, thank you so much. Wish we could be there. If I remember correctly you are a good cook. I'm thankful that Corby is there to spend time with Shelby and give you a little bit of a break to catch up on good sleep. Love you both ~ Mom xoxo

Shelby keep up the good work! You better push yourself in Occupational Therapy and make me proud. My family and friends from all over the USA are praying for you and Matt. We miss you here at work. I need a side kick to help me battle Sushma and Amy. Ruby M told me to tell you hello. You and Matt remember, Faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen.
