April 11 and 12, 2009

Happy Easter all. Another quiet weekend. Shelby had speech therapy on Saturday and Bedside Physical Therapy this morning. Her speech therapy went well she mostly performed mouth exercises and practice some memory drills and listening comprehension. Physical therapy this morning was spent stretching her legs and head and neck. Lucas the PT was excited when he saw her move her legs on her own. He says that was some of the best he has seen from her so far. Shelby did not sleep very well last night a lot of the struggles she is having has to do with the fact that she is becoming more and more aware of her situation and that something is wrong. She keeps saying she is scared and upset but doesn't know why. She knows she can't speak, walk, or use her hands as she would like and this is immensely frustrating for her. The doctor says this is absolutely normal as people start to come back up to speed.  Hopefully she will start to come to terms with her limitations and the long road ahead and accept it as a challenge instead of being upset about it. In my experience with Shelby, and I know you will all agree, when she accepts the work ahead of her nothing, and I mean, nothing will get in her way. That being said I have no idea how long she will be emotional about this and I hope it is not long. It is extremely emotionally draining because it is hard to see her upset so much and so often. Sue made her meatloaf and twice baked potatoes for dinner tonight and she ate them by herself. Her eyes lit up the second the food was brought into the room and she knew she was getting a home cooked meal from her mom. It is nice to see her get excited and happy even if it is short lived. It is especially good to see her finally reach one of her goals (being able to eat) and see the reward as well. We also brought Hazel to see her for a short visit yesterday afternoon. She liked seeing her, but it is a little difficult to keep Hazel calm. No matter the length of her walk prior she is still very much a puppy and being in a new place makes her extremely excited. It was good for both of them though I think. Hazel has been happier this weekend because she knows Shelby is all right and Shelby loved seeing that she hasn't gotten any bigger since she last saw her. Until tomorrow keep praying for her speech and progress with her legs.

In other news: for all you A's fans out in Sunny California, if you need your brooms back the Mariners are done with them.
