Shelby has been doing better each day. Since the trach tube went in she has come off the sedation and has been awake a good majority of each day since. She is gradually gaining strength and she only needs a trach mask feeding her oxygen. She has not needed the respirator attached to the trach for a couple days now. Her cough sounds better and her lungs sound stronger. Her heart rhythm has also been significantly better. Over the course of the weekend she was back in a sinus rhythm for the first time since her surgery. Since then she has had a couple bouts of A-flutter but she seems to keep falling back into a rhythm more often now. Right now the doctors are interested in finding out what is happening with her bowels. Last night they put in a dobhoff tube and fed it past her pyloric sphincter. She seems to be moving the food through her bowels just fine, but she still has residual fluid coming from her stomach PEG tube. This leads the doctors to believe she may have some obstruction or possibly ulcers in her stomach. Tomorrow gastroenterology is going to take a look at her stomach and see if they can determine if that is the case. It would make sense because she had the PEG and was fed on that for weeks before she had any problems moving food through her stomach. No idea yet when she is going to be moved, but once they establish what is happening with her digestive tract we will probably have a better idea of when she will move back to rehab. Pray for some answers from Gastro tomorrow and pray that she continues to gets more strength back quickly. She has been out of rehab for a couple weeks now so there is no telling how strong she will be when she returns.

PRAISE the LORD. As you can tell, I check this blog everyday. I am so happy for both of you that there is this improvement. I will pray for the outcome of the test tomorrow. All things work for good to those who believe. Stay strong as Shelby gains her strength. Linda

Matt and Sue, thank you for the update; it is good to hear that the docs are investigating and coming up with possible answers; have you asked if this might be related to the swelling in her hand? It seems as if they should be able to come up with some educated guesses concerning that;
we are thinking of Shelby always and praying for a recovery from all this!

I only recently learned about the events in Shelby's life. I was one of her professors in graduate school at the University of Arizona. I remember Shelby fondly as a bright and caring young woman. I will certainly lift her up in prayer, and your family as well. -- Pagie Beeson
