Hello, Shelby! I first heard of your plight from your first grade teacher. She pointed me to where she thought your updates would be--Carepages.com. Unfortunately, I did not find you there. However, I began to pray for you. That was in June. Now in August, I was talking to a secretary at Merced College who knew a young woman from her church who...Then she said your name and the hair stood up on my arms. She got on the computer and showed me your Blog. So here I am. Every time I see a greyhound dog I think of you. You had me going with the one you adopted. Remember? You wanted me to guess what you had named it. I said there were way too many names and I would most certainly get it wrong. You kept repeating, "Guess." I would reply, "It's impossible to guess," but I would throw out another name. "Guess," was your response. I finally got it. You laughed. I smile to think of it. You are one of God's jewels, His child. I continue to pray and I thank God for those divine appointments with people who knew what you were going through. He brought them to me so I could pray for you, too. God is so good. Now I'm in your life again. Remember me? Third Grade at Peterson. Love you, Ms. Alvernaz Reply to this

Matt and Sue, thank you for the update; it is good to hear that the docs are investigating and coming up with possible answers; have you asked if this might be related to the swelling in her hand? It seems as if they should be able to come up with some educated guesses concerning that; we are thinking of Shelby always and praying for a recovery from all this!
We are very encouraged to hear that Shel is again doing better each day. We continue to pray for you all. Shelby, with all the prayer support from family and friends Lynn and I both know God hears, and you will be well again soon.

Matt, This is the Bible study that was e-mail to me this morning. I thought of you as I read it. We continue to pray for you both. We pray that He will soon calm your storm! God hears our prayers!
The God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:9
I laugh every time I hear the radio commercial that has a woman shouting to her friend in conversation. She's trying to talk above the sounds of the thunderstorm in her own head. Ever since a storm damaged part of her home, that's all she hears because her insurance company isn't taking care of her claims.
I've heard thunderstorms in my head, and maybe you have too. It happens when a tragedy occurs to us, to someone close to us, or to someone we hear about in the news. Our minds become a tempest of 'what if' questions. We focus on all the possible bad outcomes. Our fear, worry, and trust in God fluctuate as we wait, we pray, we grieve, and we wonder what the Lord will do.
It's natural for us to be fearful in a storm (literal or figurative). The disciples had Jesus right there in the boat with them, yet they were afraid (Matt. 8:23-27). He used the calming of the storm as a lesson to show them who He was, a powerful God who also cares for them.
We wish that Jesus would always calm the storms of our life as He calmed the storm for the disciples that day. But we can find moments of peace when we're anchored to the truth that He's in the boat with us and He cares. -Anne Cetas
Fierce drives the storm, but wind and waves Within His hand are held, And trusting His omnipotence My fears are sweetly quelled. -Brown
To realize the worth of the anchor, we need to feel the stress of the storm. Reply to this

Keep working hard to get out of that hospital and keep trusting God to help you do it. I was thinking the other day about the cutting board I made you for Christmas, and I remembered your favorite bible verse that I wrote on it. Do you remember? Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you", declares the Lord, "plans for welfare and not calamity to give you a future and a hope". Keep trusting that your Heavenly Father loves you, and that He has an incredible plan for your life and it's only good. Everything you've done so far, and that you and Matt continue to do through your your road to recovery glorifies Him. Matt, I've got to tell you that are an incredible man. You have been everything that God intended a husband to be. We thank God that Shelby has you in her life because we have you, too. Give those SLPs HELL and know that I'll be following your progress. We never know what lessons God has in mind when he gives us these challenges -but think about those patients who benefitted from your expertise and guidance when you were at the Aquatic Center in Tucson and know that what you are learning now will serve you in the future.
Love you,
Ms. Alvernaz

You don't know us, but we know you and Shelby through Momma Sue. She is such a blessing to us. We have been praying for you and Shelby and have had our youth group pray for you guys also. My husband is the youth pastor at FBC in Merced. And we are encouraged by Shelby's perserverence these last few days!! She is very blessed having you in her life. We will continue lifting you and Shelby up in prayer. This is my favorite verse and it helps me through difficult times, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Hi Matt & Shelby, First, I want to thank you Matt for the latest updates. It sounds very promising that Shelby is making real progress and I would think this would have some real impact on extending her release date. Shelby I love to see all the picture of you, your looking good and I'm getting use to your dark hair, it's cool. Of course you know how I loved your long blonde curls. You are a very strong, determined person and the proof of that is in all you have accomplished in the last week. It is so great that you have so many friends helping and caring for you, not to mention a Mom that in my opinion is NUMBER ONE in the book. Love you so much!!!!! Matt, thank you again for being the person you are and taking such good care of Shelby. You are both in my thoughts every day.
Love you much, Grandma Shirley

Lord, we come to you anxious about the future yet confident You are there. I pray for Matt & Sue that they would get great sleep & rest in these next hours & that miraculously they would regain energy from even short stints of rest. Sweet Shelby we again & again give to Your hands. We pray that she, too, would grow in strength as her body heals. Lord, I pray that You would see fit to heal her body completely. We praise you for the things she did this week and this time of intubation would not hinder those progresses. we ask these things knowing You are sovereign. In Your loving name.

-Anne Cetas
Fierce drives the storm, but wind and waves
Within His hand are held,
And trusting His omnipotence
My fears are sweetly quelled. -Brown
To realize the worth of the anchor, we need to feel the stress of the storm.

Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. Psalm 68:19
Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me (a thorn in Paul's flesh). But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weakness, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why for Christ's sake, I delight in weakness, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. II Cor. 12:7-10
But God keeps his promise, and he will not allow you to be tested beyond your power to remain firm; at the time you are put to the test, he will give you the strength to endure it, and so provide you with a way out. I Cor. 10:10-13
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. II Cor. 1:3-5
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

thanks for the update. yes, it is quite warm here today. I'm in a sweater in the house but only because this old house keeps the cool in. Darren is out getting us a dog right now, so our populous is just about to get...slobberier. Someday Hazel should come over for a playdate! Is your MIL driving you crazy yet Matt?
We love you guys. Thanks, too, for the ever-important detailing of Shelby's character. Thank you, Lord, for keeping Shelby Shelby in all of this. We ask You to help us know that Your plan is the best...keep that sarcasm sharp & the mind ever-sassing!
Hope your day is great. Will send along a pic of the newest Tarbell soon...maybe a snapshot of the kiddos, too.

Hi Shelby & Matt,
My condolences on the snow, we had 3 inches ourselves last week but then followed up with 60 degrees yesterday. Spring is definitely slow in coming this year, hang in there. I like the face Shelby, very appropriate - funny girl. Love and miss you both ~ Mom

Dear Shelby, I just heard a saying by Mary Tyler Moore (you may not know who she is but she is an actress of mine and your parents era)and I thought of you and Matt. Here goes-- If only wonderful things happen to you in your life then you never know how brave you are. Well, you two are the most brave young people I've ever known. You guys are an awesome team, and we are all praying for you both, to have the strength and patience to get through each day.

Hi Shelby,we love you! Jenine, the boys and I are all so amazed at how incredibly strong you are. We're all praying for you and Matt, but Peanut and I say a special prayer every night for you.
You both keep hanging on to each other, and keep working hard to get better, and we'll keep praying. We love you both so very much,

Hi Shelby and Matt,
I received an email from Karen Doyle updating me about happened and have read all of Matt's updates. Just wanted to let you know that you are both in my thoughts and prayers as you navigate this incredibly challenging journey. (Matt - I am one of Shelby's offsite clinical supervisors when she was in grad school at the U of A). Shelby - you are a very strong young woman who can do anything she puts her mind to. Give those SLPs HELL and know that I'll be following your progress. We never know what lessons God has in mind when he gives us these challenges -but think about those patients who benefitted from your expertise and guidance when you were at the Aquatic Center in Tucson and know that what you are learning now will serve you in the future. As soon as you are up to it I'm looking forward to an email update from you
Matt - thank you for your dedication to Shelby and for all your updates. She is truly blessed to have you in her life.

Sometimes these hardest times are when we are the closest to God. We all read your updates every night. The updates give us the specifics to pray for and we will continue to do so. Shelby, keep up the great work, and Matt keep on being that great soul mate. The rewards will be great for both of you. Remember, God loves you both so much and He knows the big picture plus all the burdensome stuff we have to go through. Rest in His all-knowing. We love you both! Stanley and Lana

WHAHOOOO!!! No more nose tube or as Anthony describes it "no more big long plastic bugger". Sorry about that, sometimes there is no controlling him. We're glad the PEG went well. Sleep well, both of you, so you are rested up for another busy day. Kisses and blessings, we love you both.

Matt & Shelby,
I'm so grateful everything went well and now you won't have to have the irritation of that nose tube and tape. Another step of progress. Now on to much more work, we will keep praying that you can stay awake for that and Matt that you don't get too worn out. We love you both.

So relieved to hear that the procedure went well and Shelby is fine. I have been thinking about her all last night and today hoping that everything would work the way it was planned. Tell Shelby I am still talking at her from here in Merced and asking God to give you both strength each day. Jim and I send love and encouragement to you both. Sherry Elms

I can't wait to see you without the tube in your nose and the tape on your face. I know Jenny is going to make you Elmo laugh while she is there.

Shelby and Matt,
It's so good to hear about the progress you're making everyday. I'm glad to hear you've got your usual spunk! I can picture the rolling eyes, scowls, and dirty looks that Matt gets when he tattles on you for cheating! Matt, thanks for the informative updates. I look forward to reading them each day. Jeff and I and the girls continue to pray for you guys. God Bless You!

Shelby,
We love you and miss you so much. I am so sad that we have to wait to visit you. We were planning to come today & at 5 am, Kaylee woke up with a fever. I am so frustrated not to be able to do anything for you guys but pray. We are amazed and astounded by your progress & know God is working. Keep up the sarcasm! We love you!

Shelby,
It's great to hear the news that you are beginning to talk a bit. You keep up the fight - and the cheatin' if you want to. I got a big kick out of the story about arranging the pictures by turning over the pieces and putting them in order by number. That's pretty darn clever. All of us in Washington are continuing to pray for a full and speedy recovery. We love you.

Yeah!!! Is she pulling it out on purpose or is she asleep? Will they restrain her arms when she is sleeping? Will she have OT,PT & SLP tomorrow and Sunday?

Probably on purpose, but could be a reflex. She seems to reach for it in her sleep so who knows. I won't let them restrain her arms and I don't know about therapy tomorrow yet but I will include it in my update tonight.

Shelby we can picture the bad eye coming out during some of your sessions. Not sure who it might be directed toward but our hunch would be Matt
Matt, when you get to bring Hazel in make sure you take her potty first. Don't want any reruns like the treadmill day.
We love you both.
